The Problem
Many of the defining challenges facing modern society are now well understood. We know that trust in institutions is declining, that media systems are under pressure, that technology is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of corporations, and that communities often lack the resources and infrastructure needed to organise effectively.
Yet despite the quality of research produced by universities, think tanks and civil society organisations, relatively little attention is paid to a crucial question: how do we actually build the institutions capable of solving these problems? The Independent Media Trust believes this implementation gap has become one of the greatest barriers to meaningful social change.
What We Will Do
To address that gap, the Trust is incubating New Estate, a public-interest strategy and implementation lab dedicated to turning ideas into practical action.
New Estate begins with a simple methodology: identify a problem, design a better solution, and then produce a detailed implementation plan that others can use.
Every project moves beyond policy recommendations to include governance models, funding strategies, organisational structures, communications plans, partnership mapping, budgets, timelines, risk assessments and practical delivery frameworks.
The objective is to make complex ideas genuinely usable by campaigners, charities, cooperatives, public bodies, funders and communities.
The programme will produce several complementary outputs. Major strategic reports will explore long-term challenges facing democratic society.
Short Policy Packs will translate those ideas into accessible recommendations for policymakers and institutions. Practical Field Guides will provide step-by-step implementation blueprints that organisations can adapt to their own work, while public-facing video essays will broaden participation and bring new audiences into the conversation.
Together, these outputs create a pipeline from research to implementation, helping ideas move beyond discussion and into practice.
Our Vision
Underlying this work is a broader vision of democratic sovereignty.
New Estate argues that people should have meaningful influence over the systems that shape their lives—not only government itself, but also the systems through which we receive information, discover knowledge, communicate with one another, build communities and hold power to account.
As technological, economic and institutional power becomes increasingly concentrated, strengthening society requires rebuilding democratic capacity across these interconnected systems.
Our Purpose
The Independent Media Trust sees New Estate as long-term public infrastructure rather than a conventional think tank. Its purpose is not simply to publish research, nor to campaign around individual issues, but to equip people with practical tools for institution building.
By developing repeatable methodologies, open implementation guides and democratic governance models, New Estate aims to increase the capacity of civil society to design, fund, govern and sustain solutions over time.
Success will not be measured only by reports published, but by organisations established, policies adopted, projects launched and communities empowered to take ownership of change.
Invest
The Trust is seeking philanthropic investment to establish New Estate as a permanent resource for the public-interest sector.
Funding will support research, practical Field Guides, policy development, public engagement, digital tools and partnerships that enable ideas to become action.
In doing so, New Estate aims to help build a society in which citizens are not simply asked to identify problems or demand change from others, but are equipped with the knowledge, plans and institutional tools to help create lasting change themselves.
