Building the Digital Infrastructure for Independent Media
The internet promised to democratise information. Instead, a handful of American technology companies now decide what billions of people see, who gets heard, and which publishers survive.
That concentration of power has made our information system less resilient, less diverse and less accountable. It has weakened independent journalism, left citizens increasingly dependent on opaque algorithms, and created an unhealthy reliance on foreign-owned digital infrastructure.
Bulletin exists to change that.
Incubated by the Independent Media Trust, Bulletin is building a new kind of media platform: one designed from the ground up to serve readers, publishers and democracy rather than maximise engagement or advertising revenue.
Our ambition is straightforward. We want to make it as easy to discover trusted independent journalism as the existing platforms make it to consume clickbait, outrage and misinformation.
More importantly, we want to build digital infrastructure that strengthens information sovereignty and technological sovereignty, giving democratic societies greater control over how information is distributed, discovered and funded.
Although Bulletin is being developed in the UK, our ambition is international. We are already working with independent publishers across Europe, hope to work alongside public service broadcasters, and intend to create a genuinely global platform for trusted journalism.
Why Bulletin is Different
Many organisations have tried to build alternatives to Big Tech. Almost all of them face the same problem: they have excellent technology, but no audience.
Bulletin starts from the opposite position.
More than 100 independent media organisations have already committed to supporting Bulletin publicly when it launches. Together they reach millions of readers who already value independent journalism and are actively looking for better alternatives.
That means our greatest competitive advantage is not simply our technology. It is our community. Instead of spending years and millions of pounds trying to persuade people to trust another technology platform, we can introduce Bulletin through the publishers they already know and respect.
